As an aspiring fashion photographer/blogger/writer/lover/ista ... this is the kind of photo that strikes me right down to the core. I love the angle, the intimacy of the moment, the interaction of the subjects, the framing and the minimal colors. It's a sweet and stylish shot. Lately I find that I've been drawn to photographs that crop out faces and parts of bodies, and let you take in everything else: the hair, the legs, the clothes... the shoes! I die.

So Kristen Stewart was on Jimmy Fallon last night. She's awkward, he's awkward, it was fabulous. They randomly discussed New York, Taylor Lautner's abs, and Bon Iver. Apparently she told Jimmy to check out this video on YouTube, and she was right to. If you love Bon Iver, which you should, because he (they?) is (are?) phenomenal, you'll really dig this. Above is an acapella version of "For Emma," sung in a hallway somewhere in Paris. Yes please.

You guys, my new boyfriend is so cute. We do almost everything together these days. He's one of the best boyfriends because he likes to go out as much as he likes to stay in. So, as I promised on Tuesday, here's how I've been rocking my new men's J. Crew sweatshirt/top, dressed up, dressed down and layered in:

Dressed up: with Nordstrom Rack pearls, Dior sunglasses, an H&M beret, Spanx patterned tights, Steve Madden heels and a little ruffled slip. This feels like an outfit I could wear around town in a place like New York City, but here in Seattle, breaking out those heels is reserved for a night out downtown.

Dressed down: long Sparkle tank top, Frenchie leggings, Steve Madden boots, Bula ski hat, Nordstrom Rack pearls, and Dior shades. I've been sporting this look day in and day out since I purchased the top. Sometimes I wear it with my Uggs or my Corso Como riding boots, and often with a big, black pashmina and down vest on top.

Layered in: Vintage mink from my friend Mark's grandmother, Sparkle long white tank, DIY 7 For All Mankind jorts, DKNY tights, Target patent leather ballet flats, Ray Ban Aviators, and H&M beret. Ok, so truth be told, it's really hard to pull off fur in Seattle in your 20s. I'd like to imagine though, that someday soon I'll be brave enough to wear this ensemble out to coffee or cocktails on Capital Hill - because I love it!

From hitting the town to cozying up at home or in a cafe, I think my J.Crew boyfriend top and I are going to have a long and well-dressed relationship.

mid-week music moment...

My friend Heather recently got me listening to Fleet Foxes, and I find their music perfect for these chilly November days. It's sort of ethereal and dreamy, and like much of the music I've been listening to and posting lately, makes me just want to curl up by the fire with a good book and watch the rain come down.

are you afraid of the dark?

I'm a firm believer that a person can be completely transformed by the clothes they wear. Look good, feel good. The clothes make the man. Dress for success. I mean, cliche, cliche, cliche. But seriously! For example, I behave differently in high heels than I do in flats. I strike a more elegant pose, I walk with a bit of a swagger, and inside, I feel a little hotter (whether or not anyone else perceives the difference is unclear).

On that note, I'd like to throw out a metaphor: fingernails are like the shoes of your hands. I mean, right? (If you factor out rings and bracelets and things you actually wear on your hands.) Think about it: unpainted nails = sneakers. Pink nails = cute flats. Red nails = classic, sexy stilettos. Deep, dark black or purple nails = cool, edgy, heels with straps and zippers and studs.

At least, that's how I feel when I paint my nails in my favorite go-to dark shade, O.P.I.'s Lincoln Park After Dark. A little edgy, a little mysterious, maybe even dangerous. That color became a cult phenomenon in my sorority, starting around the fall of 2006. I spent the following spring in Aix-en-Provence, France, and my nails were LPAD for 5 straight months. It was tres chic.

So, I have to be sick of that color by now, right? No. Not even a little bit. I just bought my 3rd bottle of it in preparation for this winter. I'm a bit of a home manicure-a-holic. I love the ritual of painting my nails, and try to do them once a week. Accordingly, I frequently find myself at my favorite bastion of nail polish heaven, Beauty Works. I spend a totally unreasonable amount of time combing the aisles, sampling colors, and comparing Essie to O.P.I to Butter to whatever else is on-hand.

This winter, I'm going to expand my horizons beyond my beloved deep purple. There are so many great dark shades I haven't tried. Grey, green, navy... For example, my friend Julie recently introduced me to O.P.I Here to today, Aragon Tomorrow, a super-dark grey. Here's a few more dark hues I'm loving right now...

Signed, sealed, delivered. I found the essential cozy piece I'm going to live in this winter - in the men's section of J. Crew. Behold:

Heathered cotton jersey crewneck; $39.50 at J.Crew

Here's how they describe it: It's the twisted cotton jersey that makes this crewneck special. So soft that it feels like a favorite vintage sweatshirt worn-in just right it's also lightweight, making it the perfect piece for layering year-round. We used a special weaving technique to achieve this vintage, heathered effect. Rib trim at neck, cuffs and hem.

Here's how I describe it: Perfect.

It's so soft it almost feels like cashmere, it's just the right shade of light, heathered grey, and it's less than $40. I got it in a medium so that it's long enough to slouch perfectly over leggings. It will be amazing for just lazing around, but also with a couple long strands of pearls, a tunic-length black tank underneith, tights and flat black riding boots - it's appropriate for going out and about too!

Just describing that outfit got me excited...I'll throw a few looks together and post them later this week.

undiscovered treasure: Two for the Road

Over the weekend my mom and I watched Two for the Road, a 1967 movie starring Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney, with music by Henry Mancini. Set in the south of France, The married couple revisit the roads and beaches and hotels where they first fell in love, twelve years before. It's a great exploration of the nature of marriage, not to mention the wardrobe (Mary Quant and Paco Rabanne), the cars and the scenery are to die for. As a pretty hardcore Audrey fan, I was surprised I had never seen this movie, and neither had my mom. It doesn't rival Sabrina, Roman Holiday or Breakfast at Tiffany's for iconic romance, but it's quirky and funny and a bit of a hidden gem in her cinematic repertoire. Give me Audrey, outfits and the south of France, and I'm pretty much sold.

The scenes on the beach totally took my mind right back to the days I spent studying abroad in Aix-en-Provence, when we would play hookie from class and take the train down to Cassis to lay in the sun and swim in the Mediterranean.

I'm having such a moment for this petit sac right now. Last summer, I picked up a simple little black pouch with a cross-body strap from H&M, and it kind of changed my (social) life. In the past, I would be precariously squeezing my clutch under one arm or holding in one hand with a cocktail in the other - unable to grab my phone, shake a hand or give a hug. Now, with my belongings sitting pretty down by my hip, my hands are free to gesture wildly, flip my hair, flag down the bartender, throw up in the air while i dance, send saucy text messages, carry cocktails - all at the same time. My favorite is the Marc By Marc Jacobs Percy, because the price is right and it comes in an array of colors. So come on, join the hands-free revolution girls - your manicure deserves some freedom.

make-up moment: intense eyes

As much of a girly-girl as I am, I have never been really into make-up. Until I was a junior in high school, I never wore eyeliner because I was convinced I just couldn't pull it off. One night though, when I was totally bored and struggling with my Advanced Algebra homework, I decided to break into my mom's make-up drawer and try out her black liner crayon.

Since that fated night, a soft black crayon has become my get-pretty BFF. Just the top, all the way around, thick, thin, subtle, dramatic... apparently the varying ways I like to wear liner are full of saucy innuendo!

Anyway, lately I've been craving all the way around, thick and dramatic. I went all-out on Halloween because, well, I could pass it off as part of my costume. At Homecoming, I used 'all the pictures we'll be taking' as an excuse for bringing on the glam eyes (I look better in pictures with a defined eye. I'm convinced.).

Magazines are always saying that your 20s are the time to "experiment" and "be daring" when it comes to fashion and make-up, so perhaps I will take them up on that suggestion.

If you see me out this weekend, you may mistake me for a well-dressed raccoon. You've been warned.

The weather people keep saying it may snow around the Northwest this weekend...maybe even tomorrow. I can't help but think of the last big snow in Seattle last winter, and how it was one of those epic, unforgetable string of hours that make all the terrible, rainy, grey days worth while...

finally: new Vampire Weekend

In the last couple of years, there have been very few albums of new music that I have been totally obsessed with from beginning to end. The one I still come back to whenever I need great driving music in the summer or perfect hangout music in the winter is Vampire Weekend.

As much as I love the whole album and still really like listening to it, I've been dyyyyying for something new from them for ages! Their song "Ottoman" from the soundtrack to Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist was great as well, but it's only one song.

I read an interview in Rolling Stone this summer, saying that Vampire Weekend had a new album coming out soon, and finally we get our first taste, on their Web site, with a song called "Horchata."

I love it. It's upbeat, layered and sounds new but unmistakably VW.

The album, called Contra, comes out January 12th. I guess this will have to tide me over until then!

In the rush and excitement before homecoming, I didn't get a chance to post pictures from Halloween. For this, I apologize. I really appriciated all your votes and advices about what costume I should don, but in the end, the recessionista in me won out, and I didn't spend a dime on my costume.

A frenzied late-night raid of one of our basement closets revealed a witch hat, some devil horns, a unicorn hat of sorts, and some cat ears. I figured that between my mom and I, there must be an entire costume that could be pulled together from our closets and topped off with one of those accessories.

Turns out I was right! I found a black lace leotard among my mom's racks of 90s left-overs and some black fabric with gold stars on it, and I knew I was onto something. I combed my closest for my favorite saucy black items (knee-highs, Urban Outfitters skirt, Urban Outfitters lace bra, Steve Madden heels) as well as some cool accessories (big gold hoops, a gold chain, a gold moon necklace and two large crosses (for protection on All Hallows Eve, says my mom)) and voila!

Now all I needed was my costumed-up friends and some great parties to attend...

The Halloween gods were smiling on me that night, and I got both!
